Press Release

Dominique Varner to Speak Nov. 3 at Texas Credit Union League's 2008 Compliance, Audit and Human Resources Conference

HOUSTON, Texas (Oct. 28, 2008) - Dominique Varner, a partner with Hughes Watters Askanase L.L.P. (http://www.hwa.com/) has been selected as a speaker for the upcoming Texas Credit Union League's 2008 Compliance, Audit and Human Resources Conference in Dallas, Texas. The conference will be held Nov. 2-4 at the Dallas Lincoln Centre.

Varner, who supports HWA's Bankruptcy and Consumer Financial Services Practice areas, is scheduled to speak on Nov. 3.  Her presentation is entitled "Do You Know the Ins and Outs of Your Most Complex Accounts?" and will address advanced deposit account issues. Varner has served as a presenter at Texas Credit Union League conferences in the past, having spoken on topics ranging from the Federal Debt Collection Practice Act to handling deceased borrower accounts.

Corina Balsells, Course Director, who has been actively involved in the planning of the Texas Credit Union League Conference, asked Varner to participate in the 2008 conference.  Balsells recommended Varner because of her familiarity with Varner's experience in representing credit unions for more than 13 years.

"Deposit account issues are an important topic to address because they frequently involve day-to-day decisions that must be made over the counter with the membership.  It's good for employees to have a basic understanding of how non-traditional accounts such as sole proprietorships should be documented.  I will also be discussing estate and trust accounts and how credit unions should respond to garnishments and tax levies, which occur more often than one would expect.  Responding in the wrong way to these types of legal actions imposed against accounts can result in unintended liability for the credit union," Varner commented.

The Compliance, Audit, and Human Resources Conference was developed to equip attendees with the tools needed to help credit unions grow in this rapidly changing financial environment.  The conference will present recent regulatory developments, including how to protect your credit union from internal and external fraud.  Current topics in the Human Resources arena will be addressed, in addition to overall compliance policies and procedures required to run a successful credit union.  For more information on the conference or to register, please visit www.tcul.coop/Compliance_Conference.html.
