First Southern District Bankruptcy Bench/Bar Conference
HOUSTON, Texas (Nov. 3, 2008) - Janet Northrup, Wayne Kitchens, and Brendetta Scott, attorneys with Hughes Watters Askanase L.L.P. (HWA), have been chosen to serve as speakers at the inaugural Southern District Bankruptcy Bench/Bar Conference. The conference is sponsored by the Bankruptcy Section of the Houston Bar Association and will be held in The Woodlands, Texas, Nov. 6-7.
Janet Northrup, of counsel with HWA, will serve on the opening panel on Nov. 6 and will address Case Law Updates affecting bankruptcies that have occurred within the last 12 months in the Southern District of Texas, Federal District Court, 5thCircuit Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court. Her co-panelists include Preston Towber of The Towber Firm, P.C. and Henry Flores of Haynes & Boone, L.L.P., both based in Houston, Texas.
Northrup is on the planning committee for this first Bench/Bar Conference for the Southern District of Texas. With more than 25 years in practice, Northrup has earned a solid reputation as an accomplished presenter and exceptional Chapter 7 Trustee and debtor's attorney.
Kitchens, a co-managing partner with HWA, will serve as a panelist on the topic of "363 Sales: When is a Sale a Sale and Not a Secret Plan" on Nov. 7. Kitchens was chosen because of his reputation and experience as a business bankruptcy practitioner. Other panelists who will join Kitchens are Judge Richard Schmidt, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of Texas, Shelby Jordan of Jordan, Hyden, Womble, Culbreth & Holzer, P.C. and Barbara Rogers of Rogers, Anderson & Bensey, P.L.L.C.
"The sale of a company's assets while in bankruptcy in accordance with Section 363 is a hot topic these days. This panel will help attorneys understand the current bankruptcy environment for sales under these conditions," said Kitchens. "I'm pleased to be a part of a panel of such highly regarded practitioners."
Scott, an HWA associate, will speak on "Mortgages - Chapter 13 and Beyond" as part of a panel on Nov. 7. Joining Scott on the panel is Judge Marvin Isgur, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of Texas, Cindy Boudloche, Chapter 13 Trustee, Johnie J. Patterson II, of Walker & Patterson, P.C., and Marjorie A. Britt of Marjorie Payne Britt, P.C.
Scott and her fellow panelists also will provide practical advice and strategies for effectively dealing with a home mortgage from the perspective of an experienced judge, trustee, debtor's attorney and creditor's attorney.
