Randy Elkins Joins
Hughes Watters Askanase as Special Counsel
HOUSTON (May 1, 2008) - Hughes Watters Askanase L.L.P. (HWA) announced that Randy Elkins has recently joined the Houston-based law firm as special counsel to the real estate and finance practice group. In this capacity, he will provide transactional and litigation counsel to financial institutions and other clients of the firm involved in complex real estate and debtor-creditor transactions.
"In today's financial environment, lenders need experienced attorneys who can help them structure and document transactions to better maximize their positions when it's time to collect," said Elkins. "HWA has a well-deserved reputation as one of the top creditor-debtor firms in Texas and has long been recognized for its depth of experience in financial transactions."
Elkins said that he decided to return to the practice of law in this capacity due to the state of the current financial environment and the similarities between today's business climate and that of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
"I enjoyed practicing in that environment, and it appears it may be about to repeat," said Elkins. "HWA has given me the flexibility I need for my other responsibilities, and I'm delighted to be part of their team."
In 2000, Elkins left the full-time practice of law to pursue investment opportunities through Commerce Funding Group, LLP, a closely-held investment partnership. From 1995 through 2000, Elkins was a partner in the Houston office of Baker & Hostetler LLP, where his practice focused on real estate and financial transactions. Prior to 1995, he was a name partner at Elkins & Yount, a local law firm with significant financial institution representation. At the beginning of his career, Elkins served as vice president in lending at Texas Commerce Bank, now JPMorgan Chase & Co., and then as outside counsel to numerous banks and other financial institutions. Elkins was certified in commercial real estate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 1998.
"We're thrilled to have Randy Elkins join us. Randy's addition represents the continued expansion of our real estate and finance practice and is core to our strategy of addressing the broad ranging and complex issues faced by financial institutions and other clients in the current business and legal environment," said Gary Gunn, a partner with HWA. "Randy's depth of knowledge and experience in the real estate and finance arena adds significant value to our firm and complements our existing team's ability to meet our clients' needs."
